The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce is pairing with the city of Lakeland to make a video that will be against the current plans for CSX and the Integrated Logistics Center that is slated to be built in Winter Haven, according to Patricia Jackson, Eagle Lake city manager. A representative from the Lakeland chamber contacted Jackson on Monday to ask if Eagle Lake wanted to be involved. At the commission meeting Monday, Eagle Lake city commissioners decided not to take part in the video. Residents from Auburndale, Bartow, Lakeland, Lake Wales, Mulberry, Ocala, Plant City, Tampa and Wildwood will all speak in the video. According to Jackson, the taping will take place Tuesday afternoon and all day Wednesday because there are plans to send it to the Legislature next week. The script deals with concerns about the impact CSX and its ILC will have on surrounding areas. "According to studies, the tracks in our cities have the capacity to run 54 trains per day...This would result in 36 more trains running through our cities in a 24-hour period...Not just the four additional trains CSX is touting," the script reads.
In the video, participants are asking for a "detailed analysis of all the impacts associated with the project" by doing a comprehensive study before spending $491 million. The Lakeland chamber has been open about its discontent concerning the ILC. CSX's "S" line passes through the recently renovated downtown of Lakeland and the chamber is concerned about the community impacts that are expected from increased freight traffic.
