"My mission in life is to make a difference in the lives of youth," said Clark, who will be the keynote speaker during the lunch. The free event, which will be held at the Lakeland Center, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 5. Seats for the event have already been filled. Teen participants will receive a free lunch and a T-shirt, among other items. They will also be eligible to win more than $2,000 in door prizes including iPods and gift certificates. The event brings teens together to discuss and learn about life issues they face every day.
Each week, 23 teens ages 15 to 19 give birth; every three weeks, one child ages 10 to 14 gives birth. In 2006, Polk County was the ranked the 16th highest of Florida's 67 counties for births to teens under 18. The event brings teens from all walks of life together with community agencies, organizations, faith groups and education and business leaders. The Teen Pregnancy Prevention Alliance will host more than 50 resource table displays where teens can find services and resources available to them. The Youth Leadership Team gives a voice to the perspective of Polk County's youth and teen pregnancy prevention. Team members come from diverse backgrounds and with a wide range of opinions on sex, relationships, dating and the reality of being a teenager in today's society. The summit is sponsored by the Health Start Coalition, the Lakeland Center, the city of Lakeland, county commissioners, the Polk County Health Department, Stay Well, Health Ease, Amerigroup, Polk Works, Progress Energy, Clark/Nikdel/Powell, Heartland for Children and TECO. It is also sponsored by Polk County's voter approved half-cent sales tax for indigent health care. For details, call the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Alliance at 863-297-3043.
