Man on ATV shot after running over officer

BELLE GLADE -- A man driving an all-terrain vehicle in a vacant lot was shot three times by a deputy who said the driver ran him over after he tried to tell him to slow down.

Simon P. Mosley, 29, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery and aggravated assault on a police officer after the Tuesday night shooting. He was in stable condition at St. Mary's Medical Center on Thursday, and will be placed in the Palm Beach County Jail when released, a jail spokeswoman said.

Authorities said Belle Glade Officer Harold Seiler was just trying to slow Mosley down and stop him from "popping wheelies."

When Seiler motioned Mosley to stop, Mosley sped toward the officer and ran him down, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's report.

"The officer landed on the front of the bike, and was holding on to the handlebars," the report said.

Seiler thought he might die when Mosley drove into traffic as he hung on to the front of the four-wheel-drive vehicle, the report said.

That's when the officer started shooting, hitting Mosley in the pelvis, left arm and left shoulder with his .45-caliber revolver, the report said.

Seiler then fell off the vehicle and Mosley drove away, abandoning the ATV at his mother's house, the report said.

Authorities caught up to Mosley shortly after at Glades General Hospital, where relatives had taken him, the report said. He was transferred to St. Mary's.

Seiler came out of the crash with a few scratches, sheriff's Sgt. Dave Carhart said.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave while the police department and sheriff's office investigate, Belle Glade Police Chief Mike Miller said.
